Latest revision as of 11:20, 21 March 2024

A warm welcome to the Turbulence Technical Committee's wiki page! As part of the OpenFOAM Governance structure, our job is to advance the turbulence modelling capabilities of OpenFOAM. Here, you can find information about us, our current activities and also how to get in touch.

Members of the Committee

There are currently eight committee members, led by Timofey Mukha who acts as chairman.

Collectively, we have experience in a wide range of turbulence modelling approaches and areas of application. A brief summary follows.

  • Charles Mockett: hybrid RANS-LES, verification & validation, numerical methods for LES; automotive industry.
  • Michael Alletto: atmospheric turbulence, particle-laden flows; wind energy.
  • Rene-Daniel Cecora: Reynolds stress modelling; automotive industry.
  • Andrew Heather: verification & validation, code development, release and maintenance.
  • Timofey Mukha: wall modelling, inflow turbulence; marine technology.
  • Philippe Spalart: RANS, hybrid RANS-LES, DNS; aeronautics, aeroacoustics.
  • Stefan Wallin: RANS, LES, Hybrid RANS-LES; aeronautics, flow control.
  • Kutalmış Berçin: verification & validation, code development, release and maintenance.

How to Contact Us

To contact the committee, we suggest that you open an issue on the OpenFOAM Gitlab, where you report problems, provide feedback, or describe your potential contribution. Issues relevant to turbulence are likely to get picked up by the committee for discussion, but the dialogue can commence already in the comments to the issue. If you want to make sure our attention is drawn, add an @timofeymukha tag inside the issue. In case you prefer more traditional ways of communicating, you can always simply send one of the members an e-mail.

Our Workflow

The committee holds roughly quarterly online meetings typically lasting about two hours. In between the meetings, we carry out planned activities and keep in touch via an online collaboration tool. An important part of the work is formulating code improvement proposals to the Steering Committee, which makes the final decision.

We also run a code repository associated with the committee, where we collect community contributions to the code. If you want to contribute, please head there and open an "issue"!

Implemented Contributions

What follows is a list of new turbulence modelling features that were introduced into the code with the help of the committee. For more details, please follow the links.

- New multiphase turbulence stabilization

- Grey-area enhanced DES models

- Updated hybrid scheme compatible with grey-area enhanced DES models
