Welcome back to Day 8. Today we will continue with turbulence modeling by doing extensive parameter studies in order to understand the differences both in theory and in application between different models. With this you will be able to choose the proper model for your own application.

Go back to "3 weeks" series.

Flow around a circular cylinder - 2D case

Let's start with the flow around a cylinder. With your knowledge gained yesterday, conduct this parameter study in order to gather experience about

  • difference between a laminar and a turbulent flow
  • case setup
  • dictionaries
  • output
  • parameter study
  • postprocessing

Theory of turbulence modeling

Now is a good idea to take a step back and go back to the theory. After the experience, that you gathered today, try to understand the ideas behind turbulence modeling and the different models. Learn about

  • available turbulence models
  • near wall treatment
  • normal wall distance
  • guidelines and tips

Flow around a square cylinder - 3D case

Now with the theory covered, go back and conduct a second parameter study about vortex shedding behind a square cylinder. With all the knowledge and experience, that you gained you should be able to correctly

  • set up a case
  • choose the correct
    • RAS models
    • LES models
  • postprocess the results

End of Day 8

We arrived at the end of Day 8. We covered one of the most extensive topics in CFD. Turbulence modeling. Now wth your gathered knowledge and experience, you will be able to set up and run successful simulations including turbulence modeling. Tomorrow we will continue with multiphase modeling.
